Rythmia Life Advancement Center

Hacienda Pinilla, near Playa Avellanas and Tamarindo, Guanacaste

One of the longest-running and most-reviewed ayahuasca retreats in the world: a resort on Costa Rica's Pacific coast, open since 2016, with its own on-site medical centre and, it says, doctors and nurses on hand around the clock. Its 7-night all-inclusive programme pairs four optional ceremonies with yoga, breathwork, meditation and integration classes.

Details from the centre's own website and independent sources, read 29 Oct 2026.

At a glance

  • Rythmia says doctors and nurses are on site around the clock, every guest goes through three-stage medical and medication screening before ceremony, and there is one staff member for every four guests. Its FAQ names two staff physicians, ten registered nurses and two emergency response technicians, with at least one of them at every ceremony. (Rythmia safety hub; Rythmia FAQ: safety and health screening)
  • An all-inclusive week: 21 organic farm-to-table meals, six yoga, three breathwork and two meditation classes, a healing massage, two medical evaluations by staff physicians, lifetime access to the RLife app, and Rythmia's shuttle from Liberia airport when you pay in full. (Rythmia pricing; Rythmia FAQ: preparation and packing)
  • Private casitas in Hacienda Pinilla, a gated resort community on Guanacaste's Pacific coast near three beaches, with a saltwater pool, spa, gym, steam room and volcanic mud baths. Tamarindo is about 20 minutes away and Liberia International Airport about an hour. (Rythmia home; Rythmia FAQ: about Rythmia)
  • Ten years of continuous operation and, by the centre's own count, more than 22,000 guests since 2016, which makes it one of the largest ayahuasca retreats anywhere. (Rythmia home)
  • Among the most-reviewed retreats of any kind on Tripadvisor, with around 2,800 five-star reviews. (Rythmia Life Advancement Center, Tripadvisor)
  • Ceremonies are led by a resident team of shamans and healers who have each worked at Rythmia for five years or more; the Wednesday ceremony is led by women. (Rythmia plant medicine FAQ)
  • Rythmia told Peyote.com in October 2026 that its ceremonies usually have 30 to 40 guests, with groups of 80 or more a couple of times a year, and that it has seen better outcomes with larger groups.
  • Rythmia's Ministry of Health sanitary permit on public record (DARS SC-2020-0372) ran to 25 November 2025, per CR Hoy. When the Ministry asked the Procuraduria General de la Republica to annul it in 2025, the Procuraduria declined and the permit stood. Rythmia describes itself as medically licensed; ask Rythmia for the permit currently in force before you book. ('Procuraduria no puede anular autorizacion a clinica que usa ayahuasca', CR Hoy, 27 Feb 2025; Rythmia safety hub)
  • Rythmia says that in its own post-stay surveys 98% of guests report a life-changing experience and 93% say it was still with them six months later. (Rythmia home)
  • Teaching includes Michael Beckwith's "The Answer Is You" classes, and the docuseries Plant Medicine, filmed at the centre, premiered on Gaia in November 2025. (Rythmia home; 'Plant Medicine' docuseries premieres on Gaia.com and Kinema, 21 Nov 2025)

Worth knowing

  • Getting there, as the centre describes it: fly into Liberia International Airport (LIR) in Guanacaste, about an hour away. Rythmia's shuttle from LIR is included when you pay in full at booking. It does not arrange transport from San Jose (SJO), a 4 to 5 hour drive. (Rythmia FAQ: preparation and packing)

The legal position in Costa Rica

Law 8204 controls DMT but does not name ayahuasca or the plants it is made from. On 27 January 2025 the Ministry of Health warned that ayahuasca and ibogaine products have no sanitary registration and are not authorised for therapeutic use, noted that DMT is a controlled substance, and advised against advertising them. There is no licensing regime for retreats, so centres operate in a legal grey area rather than on a clear legal basis.

The sources for this
  • Ley 8204 is Costa Rica's framework law on narcotics, psychotropic substances, unauthorised drugs and related activities. It is administered with the Instituto Costarricense sobre Drogas. (Instituto Costarricense sobre Drogas, current page; Transnational Institute (copy of statute), 2001)
  • On 27 January 2025 the Ministerio de Salud issued a health warning. It said ayahuasca and ibogaine products lack sanitary registration and are not authorised for therapeutic use, that DMT is on the international and national lists of controlled substances, that any product based on ayahuasca or ibogaine must comply with national control and registration rules, and it advised against advertising them. (Ministerio de Salud de Costa Rica, 27 Jan 2025)
  • Writing in La Republica on 5 February 2025, lawyer Herman Duarte argued that neither Banisteriopsis caapi nor Psychotria viridis is on the prohibited lists behind Costa Rican drug law, and called for explicit regulation of retreat centres, which he says currently operate in a legal gap. (La Republica (Costa Rica), 5 Feb 2025)

The Rythmia Way 7-night all-inclusive

'Starting at', for a shared room; the final price depends on the room. Rythmia's pages describe the ceremony payment two ways: its cost FAQ counts the ceremonies in the all-inclusive rate, and its pricing page says money for them is paid on site to a third party unrelated to Rythmia, and is optional, without giving an amount. Ask Rythmia to confirm which applies to your dates.

Screening, as the centre describes it

Three-stage medical and pharmacological screening, with every guest assessed by licensed doctors and nurses. Each medicine is subject to individual medical clearance, and ceremonies run under medical supervision in the on-site medical centre, which the centre says Costa Rica's Ministry of Health licenses. Its FAQ (read 2026-10-29) sets out the steps: a written medical questionnaire reviewed by the clinical team when you book, then an in-person evaluation by staff physicians on arrival. Medication (read 2026-10-03): "Those taking SSRIs, antidepressants, MAOIs, or CNS depressants must complete a cessation period with the proper taper protocol." Who it is not for, in its words (read 2026-10-29): "Rythmia is not suitable for individuals with epilepsy, diabetes, heart or cardiovascular conditions, liver or kidney disease, or active psychiatric disorders. Pregnant and nursing women are excluded."

What a ayahuasca retreat involves

The typical shape of this kind of programme. Use it as a checklist to ask against, not as this centre's timetable.

  1. Before arrivalMedical and psychiatric screening, and a dieta, commonly restricting alcohol, recreational drugs, pork, fermented foods, salt and sugar, and sexual activity. SSRIs and MAOIs must be resolved with a clinician well in advance.
  2. Day 1Arrival, orientation, one-to-one consultation with the healers, intention setting. No ceremony.
  3. Ceremony daysLight plant-based breakfast, integration workshop mid-morning, light lunch, rest and fasting through the afternoon, pre-ceremony yoga around 6:30pm, ceremony from roughly 7:30pm running several hours.
  4. Rest daysCeremonies alternate with rest days: group sharing circles, flower baths, healer consults, bodywork, and time to do nothing.
  5. Final dayClosing circle and integration planning. Most centres advise against flying the same day.
  6. AfterIntegration support varies enormously, from a single follow-up call to a year of community access. This is the single biggest quality differentiator and the least advertised.
