Trial of Psilocybin versus Escitalopram for Depression
Carhart-Harris R, Giribaldi B, Watts R, et al. · New England Journal of Medicine
In a phase 2, double-blind, randomized, controlled trial, 59 patients with moderate-to-severe major depressive disorder were randomly assigned to receive two doses of psilocybin 25 mg plus daily placebo capsules for 6 weeks, or two doses of psilocybin 1 mg plus daily escitalopram for 6 weeks. The primary outcome (QIDS-SR-16 score change) did not significantly differ between groups, but secondary outcomes generally favored psilocybin on response rates, remission rates, and other depression metrics.
