Breath, cold and movement

Cold exposure and breath

also known as Wim Hof Method, ice bath, sauna and plunge

Moderate intensity$ to $$$A single class, a weekend, or a week-long travel

Cycles of deliberate hyperventilation, breath retention, and immersion in very cold water. The breathing produces a strong altered state in its own right, which is the part most people do not expect. The cold produces a large and short-lived stress response that many people find clarifying.

The branded version is the Wim Hof Method: rounds of thirty to forty fast breaths, a breath hold on empty lungs, a recovery hold, then an ice bath. There is real physiology here and some genuine research, most notably a controlled endotoxin study showing an influence on the innate immune response. There is also a great deal of overclaiming stacked on top of it.

The unbranded version is older and cheaper: Finnish sauna culture, Russian banya, and winter sea swimming, all of which do most of the same thing without a certificate or a facilitator. If cost is a factor, that is the honest recommendation.

Read the risk note on this one before anything else. This is the only practice on this page with a well-documented mechanism for killing healthy young people, and it kills them in water.

The shape of it

What happens

  1. Breathing roundsThree to four rounds of fast deep breaths followed by a retention. Tingling, tetany and euphoria are normal.
  2. PreparationInstruction on how to enter the water and, more importantly, when not to.
  3. ImmersionOne to three minutes in water near freezing. The first thirty seconds are the whole difficulty.
  4. RewarmingMovement rather than a hot shower. Afterdrop, where core temperature keeps falling after you exit, is the thing to respect.

A representative shape drawn from how these are typically run. Use it as something to ask against, not as any one centre's timetable.

Where to do it

2 places that run this

Chosen for institutional standing rather than atmosphere: a named founder, a registered charity or non-profit, a published lineage, decades of operation, a price you can read before you enquire. We have inspected none of them, and each entry says what its standing actually rests on.

Helsinki, Finland

Not a retreat and not sold as transformation. A public smoke sauna on the Baltic with a ladder into the sea, which is the same practice as an ice bath weekend at roughly one percent of the cost. Included as the honest baseline against which to price everything else in this category.

No centre has paid to appear here and no link on this page earns us anything. If that ever changes it will be disclosed on the listing itself, not in a footer.

The other half

If a substance is what you're after

The retreat directory covers centres in the jurisdictions where the substance they serve is lawful, licensed or unscheduled. Read the contraindications first, because a lot of people who start there end up back on this page.

Laws change. Centres change. Know before you book.

A brief, sent only in weeks when something changes: jurisdictions that shifted, listings added or revised, and the research worth reading. No hype, no sourcing talk.
