Breath, cold and movement

Holotropic breathwork

also known as Grof breathwork

High intensity$ to $$A single 3-hour session, a weekend, or a residential week

Accelerated breathing, loud evocative music and optional bodywork, in pairs, over several hours. Grof built it explicitly as a non-drug route to the states he had been studying with LSD before it was scheduled, which makes it the most direct substitute on this page rather than a lateral one.

Participants work in pairs and swap roles. One breathes, lying down with eyes closed, for two to three hours while the music carries a deliberate arc from driving to quiet. The other sits, keeps them safe, fetches water, and does not interpret anything. Afterwards you draw a mandala and the group sits together to talk.

The experiences reported span the full range that psychedelic research describes, including perinatal and transpersonal material, which is the specific territory Grof's model was built to account for. Intensity varies enormously between people and between sessions.

The name matters commercially. Holotropic Breathwork and Grof Breathwork are trained credentials with an actual certification body behind them. A great deal of what is sold as breathwork retreat is a weekend of fast breathing run by someone with a 200-hour certificate, and the difference is not visible from a website.

The shape of it

What happens

  1. BeforeHealth screening, an explanation of the method, and pairing off with a sitter.
  2. First 30 minutesBreathing rate is deliberately raised. Tetany, tingling and cramping in hands and face are common and expected.
  3. 1 to 2 hoursThe peak. Music is at its loudest. Emotional and physical release, sometimes loud, is normal in the room.
  4. Final hourMusic quietens, breathing returns to normal, most people go still.
  5. AfterMandala drawing and a group sharing circle. Then you sit for your partner and do it in reverse.

A representative shape drawn from how these are typically run. Use it as something to ask against, not as any one centre's timetable.

Where to do it

3 places that run this

Chosen for institutional standing rather than atmosphere: a named founder, a registered charity or non-profit, a published lineage, decades of operation, a price you can read before you enquire. We have inspected none of them, and each entry says what its standing actually rests on.

Esalen Institute

Institute founded 1962; the method developed here in 1974

Big Sur, California, USA

Where holotropic breathwork was invented. Still runs Holotropic and Grof Breathwork workshops with certified practitioners, on a clifftop campus with hot springs. The most expensive way to do this and the one with the clearest provenance.

GROF Legacy Project

Founded to carry the method forward under Grof's authorisation

Synergia Ranch, near Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA

Residential breathwork in the direct lineage, run by practitioners Grof himself authorised. Smaller and less polished than Esalen, and closer to the source.

Grof Legacy Training

Authorised by Stanislav and Brigitte Grof

International, with training modules across Europe, the Americas and Asia

Not a place to go on retreat. It is the body that certifies facilitators, and the right way to check whether the person running a breathwork weekend near you has actually trained in this method or simply borrowed the word.

Format
Modular certification over years
Cost
Training programme, not a retreat

No centre has paid to appear here and no link on this page earns us anything. If that ever changes it will be disclosed on the listing itself, not in a footer.

The other half

If a substance is what you're after

The retreat directory covers centres in the jurisdictions where the substance they serve is lawful, licensed or unscheduled. Read the contraindications first, because a lot of people who start there end up back on this page.

The dispatch

Laws change. Centres change. Know before you book.

A brief, sent only in weeks when something changes: jurisdictions that shifted, listings added or revised, and the research worth reading. No hype, no sourcing talk.

Educational only. Not medical advice. Unsubscribe any time.
