The Therapeutic Potentials of Ayahuasca: Possible Effects against Various Diseases of Civilization
Frecska E, Bokor P, Winkelman M. Frontiers in Pharmacology 2016;7:35
This is a narrative review, not a systematic one, of what is known about ayahuasca, the Amazonian brew that combines DMT with beta-carboline compounds. The authors describe its traditional role in healing ceremonies, its growing use outside South America, and the research on its possible therapeutic effects. They argue that its psychological benefits come mostly from strong effects on the serotonin system, and they put forward a further idea: that DMT acting on the sigma-1 receptor might reduce chronic inflammation and oxidative stress, which could explain why traditional healers use it for so many conditions. They also say that, with the right preparation and follow-up, it has helped people with substance dependence. The review frames these as possibilities to investigate; it does not present new data.
What it found
- Describes ayahuasca's composition, traditional Amazonian use and spread to Western countries
- Argues its psychotherapeutic potential rests mainly on strong serotonergic effects
- Proposes that DMT's action at the sigma-1 receptor may counter chronic low-grade inflammation and oxidative stress
- States that ayahuasca has been effective for substance dependence when used with preparation and integration
